If you were coming in the fall answers

I'm having a hard time figuring out what the metric foot is. Can anyone help? Also for literary devices, I know that imagery and similes are used, as well as it being sort of a ballad poem. Is there any other big ones I'm missing? Yes, beginning with iambic tetrameter. The rhyme scheme is inconsistent "Imagery" is a generic term; a poem without imagery is not a poem.

The poem alternates lines of iambic tetrameter and iambic trimeter. If you read it aloud, you'll hear that meter:. The poem also uses what's sometimes called "ballad rhyme," alternating unrhymed and rhymed lines. One way to describe that meter would be xaxa xbxb xcxc etc. By the way, you've got a typo in the final line. Dickinson wrote "state," not "taste. Don't be confused by the misinformation in the other answer.

A line of iambic tetrameter has eight syllables, but it has only four beats, four stressed syllable, four iambic "feet," as I indicated above. And Dickinson's rhyme scheme in this poem is not at all inconsistent. In every stanza, lines one and three are unrhymed, while lines two and four rhyme with each other. From your question, it seems that you've already spotted the similes in the poem -- the fly simile in stanza 1, the rind simile in stanza 4, and the bee simile in stanza 5.

Don't miss the balls of yarn metaphor in stanza 2. Sound devices in the poem include alliteration those initial "b" and "s" sounds in in stanza 1 and initial "g" sounds in stanza 5 and assonance the short "u" sounds in "brush" and "Summer" and the long "i" sounds in "smile" and "housewives". Van Dieman's Land was the old name for Tasmania. I don't think it had anything to do with demons. The whole island was a penal colony where criminals were transported from Britain - this was only abolished in Emily Dickinson may have been referring to this, or simply to the fact that it is part of Australia, on the other side of the world.
